Erasures

A new kind of poem came out in the last ten years---the blackout poem. How do you write a blackout poem?

  1. Read an article in the newspaper
  2. Look for single words that stand out
  3. Put those words together to make a poem
  4. Take a black marker and "black out" all the other words

But who reads the newspaper anymore? People read the news on the internet. And nobody would make black marks on their computer screen.

Good news: you can use an app to make blackout poems. A publishing company, called Wave Poetry, made the app; they call it Erasures. How does Erasures work? The poet picks out a story from a built-in collection. As she reads the story, she clicks on a word; the word goes away. She does this until she only sees the words that make up her poem. Then, she can save it, share it or print it.

Try it. Go to erasures.wavepoetry.com. Pick a piece, find a poem and erase the rest!
